New technology is turning gym time into smarter, healthier kids

Its name is Lü, and it is turning Knox County’s gym time into an active educational environment where kids are engaged physically, intellectually, and socially emotionally.

G.R. Hampton Elementary is the first school in the district to experience the hardware and software, which is set up like a normal projector with sound and light attachments.  What it can do is what is magic.  Lü applications cover all subject matters from mathematics to STEAM, physical education, Languages, geography and more. The system also has resources to help the teacher with its implementation, such as tools and utilities such as timers, digital scoreboards, and team creators.

“Students can work on everything from identifying colors and shapes in preschool, to identifying math facts, working on mapping in Geography,” shared Amy Pennington, director overseeing the Promise Neighborhood grant programs in the district.

“It has editable and customizable applications through Lü Community, even hygiene practices, all while getting their bodies moving in a fun and interactive way.”

The district has received one Lü, which will rotate through schools throughout the year. This semester, two schools are expected to learn and utilize Lü, while next year, all schools will be rotated through on nine-week or similar scheduling.

“We hope that in the future, our grant programs, or even parent associations, can raise money to purchase a permanent Lü for their school,” said Pennington.
