Knox County Awarded $41,000 from CHI Health for Fitness

On Monday, March 16, staff members of the Knox County Public Schools (KCPS) were joined by CHI Saint Joseph Health (CHI) leadership to receive a grant in the amount of $41,000 to invest in health and wellness.

The $41,000 in funds will supplement physical education classes in KCPS by providing educational materials and equipment to improve students’ overall fitness.

Superintendent Jeremy Ledford stated that, “this support is about much more than equipment or programs. It is about helping out students build lifelong health habits and a positive relationship with physical activity.

“For many children, school is where they first learn to set goals, challenge themselves, and celebrate progress.”

At the check presentation, leaders from CHI Saint Joseph Health stressed the importance of improving the well-being and health equity of our area.

“At Saint Joseph Health, we are committed to a healthier future for all and addressing the unique needs of our neighbors,” said John Yanes, president, St. Josepth London. “As a member of CommonSpirit Health, we seek to continuously advance the common good.  Our mission calls out a special focus on serving the vulnerable, and the work of these incredible organizations is essential in advancing well-being and health equity.”

In addition to Knox County’s grant award, Hospice of the Bluegrass received funding to improve access to care for high-risk patients.

For KCPS, this will provide many opportunities for the entire family to become involved in their child’s fitness while improving their own.

“[…] allow us to host Family Fitness Nights at each school, bringing parents, caregivers, and students together to learn, move, and grow as families – because we know healthy habits are strongest when they begin at home,” said Ledford.

“We are also excited to pilot a Girls on the Run program, which combines physical activity with social-emotional learning to help young girls build confidence, resilience, and leadership.

“CHI understands that healthy communities start with healthy families, and today’s investment helps us create opportunities for our students to thrive both in and out of the classroom,” Ledford shared with those in attendance.
