Knox Central head boys’ basketball coach Brian Evans will not be returning to the hardwood next school year following an announcement made at the school on Wednesday.
Evans met with players and administrators on Wednesday afternoon to share his announcement, citing that it was a personal decision on his part to leave the head coach position.
“In my heart I know that the time is right for me to focus on other things”, Evans told students and co-workers at Knox Central.
“I look forward to being with my family more and doing more things with them without everything revolving around my schedule.”
Evans was head coach at Knox Central for five seasons. Prior to the Knox Central position, he served as middle school boys’ coach at Knox County Middle School for three seasons. His coaching record spans 27 years, 15 of those at the collegiate level and 12 at the middle and high school level.
Jeff Canady, athletic director and Tim Melton, principal at Knox Central both spoke of Evans’ accomplishments while coach at the high school.
“We value Mr. Evans’ contributions to our basketball program but more importantly the role model that he has been for our students both on and off the basketball court”, stated Melton.
While many will compliment Evans on his contributions over the years, he prefers to focus on the students that he has had the opportunity to coach and mentor.
“I want to thank all the young men who have played for me and for allowing me to coach them”, said Evans.
“I also want to thank my assistant coaches for their hard work and loyalty. The current administration has been great to work for and I want to also thank them for their support.”
It has not been officially announced yet when the head coach position will be posted as vacant. Regardless of the next coach, Evans feels that next year’s team will be one that impresses.
“I think we are leaving this basketball program in great shape and I expect great things from these boys next season and in the future beyond that,” said Evans.
