Flat Lick explores the Arts at Berea

The arts and Native American history came alive for 3rd-5th grade students at Flat Lick Elementary as they participated in workshops at Berea College.

The Craft Education and Outreach Program hosted Flat Lick students during the months of March and April in an unique opportunity to integrate lessons learned in the classroom with hands on craft and ceramic design.

Students learned how to hand build a vessel using a coil forming method during the hands on demonstration.  They vessel came alive with slip decoration, colored underglazes and carving tools.  Students were encouraged to decorate using symbols and themes from personal experiences and not use sports logos and other representational symbols.  The art became a form of personal expression, much like Native American artwork.

The trip to Berea College was funded by the Kentucky Arts Council.
