A new Board member, a new chairman, and an extension of the superintendent’s contract all took place within the first fifteen minutes of the June Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday night.
The first order of business of the evening was the public Oath of Office for the newly appointed Board member, Dr. William T. Ashburn. Dr. Ashburn will represent District #4 in Knox County. The oath was administered by Judge Greg Lay.
Immediately after the public swearing in took place, the Board addressed two major items that has had the board split, with two-two votes, during the past two months. The first item was to rescind the previous action not to renew the superintendent’s contract and offer him an extension of four years, effective July 1. The vote was 3-2 in favor with the motion passing.
The next order of business was the organization of the Knox County Board, with the election of a chairman. The Board voted 3-2 to take action on electing Gordon Hinkle to serve as chairman in the vacant seat.
