Showing love by reaching out to the community

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and in the season of chocolates, jewelry, and other gifts, students and staff in the Knox County Public Schools are showing their love through community outreach.

Two of the many Valentine’s activities occurring in Knox schools are Valentines for Veterans and Go Red for Heart Awareness.

Students at Lynn Camp Elementary are engaged in an arts and crafts project that is more than heart and cupid designs.  They are designing Valentine’s Day cards that will be sent to local veterans to show their love and support for those who love our country.

“Many times our veterans are overlooked during the holidays,” said Heather Martinez, Full Service Community coordinator at the school.  “We want to show them that we are thinking about them, and value their service, year around.”

The second project has everyone dressing red on February 14th.  Go Red for Heart Awareness is returning for a second year as students and staff dress in red to show awareness for heart disease.  February is National Heart Awareness month.  On this day faculty and staff may wear jeans with their attire for a small donation to the American Heart Association.
