Schools recognized by SESC for positive behavior supports

Eight Knox County schools were recognized this week for their fidelity in implementing positive behavior interventions and supports.

Students are using PBIS actions daily, many times without even knowing it.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS improves social-emotional competence, academic success, and school climate. It is a way to create positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environments where everyone thrives.

Southeast South Central Educational Cooperative recently reviewed the PBIS plans at each Knox County school.  They were rated on tiers of the current implementation of their plan.  Each school received a banner to recognize their fidelity and encourage continued growth to move up a tier by working hard during this year.

At the bronze, tier one level, were Central Elementary, Flat Lick, Girdler, Jesse D. Lay, Lynn Camp Elementary, and Lynn Camp Middle High School.  At the silver level, tier 2 were G.R. Hampton and Knox County Middle School.

PBIS is not a curriculum you purchase or something you learn during a one-day professional development training. It is an ongoing commitment to supporting students, educators, and families through systems change. When you implement PBIS well, students experience improved academic outcomes, and schools improve their overall climate.
