Big WINs for students as they group to achieve

Students at Flat Lick Elementary are WINning everyday as they participate in WIN groups. WIN groups (What I Need) are on the schedule for every student every day.

These groups allow students to receive personalized instruction to meet their diverse needs in reading and math.

  • Do you need help with fluency? There’s a group for you.
  • Do you need foundational skills in reading? Decoding? Phonemic Awareness? There’s a group for you.
  • Do you need help with addition and subtraction? There’s a group for you.
  • Do you need help with geometry? There’s a group for you?
  • Do you need enrichment? Do you need advanced skills? There’s a group for you too.

While visiting Mrs. Sarah Garrison recently at Flat Lick Elementary, her WIN group actively participated in a skills lesson. Mrs. Garrison asked students to be Dialogue Detectives as they were engaged in an interactive IXL lesson. Students had to identify the mistakes in punctuation as they competed with classmates to be the first to find the mistake and type it in correctly. Through benchmark assessments, Mrs. Garrison identified areas of need and addressed those areas using the IXL Leaderboards. IXL Leaderboards allow teachers to create friendly competitions based on various metrics like total questions answered, skills mastered, or time spent on IXL.

As a result of her performance in the classroom, Garrison was presented with the Knox County Public Schools’ Teacher Leader Award.  Mrs. Sheila Terrell, Principal Jason Cornett, and her students all celebrated the achievements in her classroom this school year.

Knox County Schools have invested in multiple resources that can be used during WIN. IXL is one of those resources IXL is a personalized learning platform used in K-12 education that offers interactive and adaptive practice for math, language arts, science, and social studies. It provides a comprehensive curriculum, custom-built skills aligned to state standards and textbooks, and supports assessments like NWEA MAP. Each student can have an IXL skills plan tailored to their specific needs. IXL is used by over 15 million students and is proven to improve student outcomes.
