Seen as the next step in establishing a true middle school, the leadership team at Lynn Camp is busy making plans on transitioning the 6th grade class from the elementary building to the middle/high school at the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
Although upcoming 6th grade students will join 7th and 8th graders this August, plans are to create a school within a school for the newest students on campus.
Students will take core classes in the lower middle school wing, but will be allowed to participate in elective and enrichment classes throughout the building that were impossible to offer at the elementary school.
School principal Amy Bays sees this as an important step in preparing students to be college and/or career ready.
“Students will have access to science labs and unique programs that we were unable to provide at the elementary,” said Bays.
Those programs include taking career and technical classes such as marketing, agriculture, and technology that will prepare them to follow a career pathway later at the high school level.
Assistant Principal Anthony Pennington and current 7th grade students recently met with current 5th and 6th grade students at the elementary school to answer questions and ease fears of moving to the middle/high next year.
Parents and guardians, along with students, are invited to a middle school open house scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, from 6pm – 7:30pm at the middle/high school. Information about scheduling, programs, and services will be provided along with a tour of the building and an opportunity to meet middle school teachers.
