Several Knox County students showed off their creative problem solving skills at the annual Odyssey of the Mind eastern regional tournament held at Knox Central High School on Saturday, March 5.

There were thirteen schools in the regional competition with Dewitt, Flat Lick, Girdler Knox Middle, and Knox Central representing the Knox County Schools.  All five Knox teams won their problem events and now advance to state competition.

Problem 2: As Good as Gold…berg
Problem 3: Le Tour Guide

Dewitt Elementary, 1st place
Problem 1: Extreme Mousemobiles

Girdler Elementary, 2nd place
Problem 5: Full Circle

Knox County Middle, 2nd place
Problem 3: Le Tour Guide

Flat Lick Elementary, 3rd place
Problem 3: Le Tour Guide

In Problem 1, Extreme Mousembiles, the Dewitt team designed, built, and ran a vehicle that uses mousetraps as its only source of energy.

In Problem 2,  As Good As Gold…berg, the Knox Central team presented to the judges an uncomplicated existing item that is routinely used to complete a real life task.   The team then created their own solution, a new item, which will perform the same task as the existing item.

In Problem 3, Le Tour Guide, Knox Central, Knox County Middle, and Flat Lick teams created and presented an original performance where a character acts as a tour guide.  The tour guide was quite a character, giving wrong explanations about things and explaining to participants why it is important to guard and secure a worthless item while on the tour.

In Problem 5, Full Circle, students from Girdler Elementary created and presented a humorous performance where something changed form or appearance three times before eventually undergoing a final change where it returned to its original form.  A silly character, serious character, song, dance, and surprise ending were all part of the performance.
