Knox Central students celebrate “Year of the Dragon”

Students, faculty, and community members welcomed in the “Year of the Dragon” at Knox Central High School as they celebrated and learned more about the Chinese celebration of Chinese New Year.

The event took place at Knox Central on January 26, three days after the start of the Chinese new year. The new year’s event was the second annual celebration led by community member Anne Pedersen, teacher Cathy Sue Smith, and their families.

The celebration included a variety of entertainment such as martial arts demonstration by four Knox Central students, a performance by the Knox Central Drum line and color guard, a demonstration of how to write using Chinese calligraphy, and poetry wrote by adopted Chinese children in our community.

Those in attendance were educated about Chinese superstitions, how to properly use chopsticks, how the Chinese pray, zodiac symbols, and why the “Year of the Dragon” is so special.

Celebration organizers Cathy Sue Smith and Anne Pedersen invite all to attend the third annual celebration, to be held next January.
