“Cocoa, Cookies, and Common Core”

Making the common core relevant and exciting to parents (and students) is sometimes challenging for educators, but the staff at Girdler Elementary is exploring new ways of sparking interest and involvement.

On Monday, December 2nd, Girdler Elementary third grade teachers hosted a parent workshop entitled, “Cocoa, Cookies, and Common Core”. Teachers reviewed the Kentucky Core Standards for math and provided parents with copies of the standards, as well as multiple resources (such as take home packets), and ideas to help students incorporate math at home every day. Refreshments of hot chocolate and cookies were provided through the school and FRYSC.

Third grade math teacher Mrs. Mills said, “Parent support is essential to student success. This workshop was an effort to empower parents to support their children.”
