Solar energy brightens classrooms and energizes learning at Knox ATC

Knox Schools, Harshaw Trane and Barbourville Water & Electric have partnered on a solar panel project at the Area Technology Center that will allow the center to produce some of its electricity through solar power.

Harshaw Trane has donated technical expertise and manpower to install solar grids on the roof of the Area Technology Center. The panels were oriented to access the most sunlight possible during the day and installed by Harshaw Trane with the help of KCPS electricity students. This savings project is contracted to save approximately $780 and 9600 kwh per year in energy and operational costs for the district. In addition to the solar panel project, Harshaw Trane has implemented a Performance Contract for KCPS by replacing HVAC systems, lighting and of the district’s buildings.

“We are pleased to donate resources to this school project that will help to not only reduce energy costs for the District, but provide instructional opportunities for students to gain knowledge about how these systems work,” Harshaw Trane project manager Jim Sparks said.

Barbourville Water & Electric has supported the project and will provide and install the required meters. One meter will measure how much electricity the school uses, while another meter will calculate how much electricity is produced from the solar grids on the roof.
