Dear Knox Central Students and Families,

This statement is to provide you with accurate information, discourage rumors, and ask for your assistance.

On Monday afternoon, November 1, our leadership team was made aware of a vague threat by a Knox Central High School student among their peers. As we have taught our students, several came forward and reported what they had heard.  As with any other threat in our school, we quickly notified our School Resource Officers and assisted them in their investigation.  Law enforcement deemed the threat had no credibility and all witness testimony was consistent.  Appropriate disciplinary actions have been taken as stated in our Student Code of Conduct.

As we conducted interviews concerning this incident, several students stated that yes, the verbal threat was made, but the individual was “joking”Threats of any type are not a joke.

In this case, a “joke” was made in the school, but we must teach our children that location does not matter.  Threatening and offensive language, regardless of tone or meaning, and regardless of location, are serious.  Law enforcement agencies take threats very seriously and pursue prosecution even when such incidents are intended as jokes or pranks.   We urge you to talk to your children now and impress upon them the seriousness of threats in today’s society.

Again, we appreciate that students came forward and reported what they heard. There are several actions that students can take to report information to school administrators and law enforcement.  The first option is a face-to-face meeting with a teacher, principal, or other adult in the school.  The second option is our STOP Tipline.  The student may visit https://safeschools.ky.gov from any computer or phone and enter information about bullying, violence, and other issues such as drugs, self-harm, abuse, theft, and other high risk behaviors.  If they feel that immediate action needs to be taken, they may always call 911 and report the information.

The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority, and we will continue to be vigilant.  We will also be transparent in notifying you of incidents on our school campus and in the school district.
