Scott Prewitt named new principal of Knox Alternative Programs

Scott PrewittFrom leadership, to the classroom, and even the sidelines, a well-established Knox County educator has been selected as the new principal of Knox County’s Alternative Programs.

James Scott Prewitt will fill the role, wearing multiple principal hats under the Alternative Programs grouping, which includes Knox Learning Academy, the Day Treatment Program, and Appalachian School.

Prewitt brings 22 years of experience in Knox County Public Schools. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to serving students both inside and outside the classroom.

“During my tenure, I have accumulated 11 years of teaching experience and 11 years of administrative experience, all of which were served at Lynn Camp Schools, primarily Lynn Camp Middle High School.  I have taught grades 6 through 12 Science, served as Assistant Principal for 9 years for the Preschool through 12th grade, and served two years as Assistant Principal for the middle and high school only,” reflected Prewitt.

“Also, I have coached basketball (assistant boys and head girls), cross country, bowling, tennis, football, and softball.”

The list continues with his professional-level growth and the opportunities he has had in Knox County.  He feels that each of these will play an important role in what it requires to be the principal of such a diverse group of school programs.

“I have also served as Senior Sponsor, KTIP Resource Teacher, ARC Chair, CASL Team Lead, Budget Committee Chair, AP Science Content Lead, School Safety Coordinator, Professional Development Lead, Interim Athletic Director, and many other less official roles that were equally important. I am also a NISL Certified Administrator through the Kentucky Department of Education, which will be of vital importance as I take this role as head principal.”

Some of the same great accomplishments he was a part of at Lynn Camp he hopes to carry forward to leadership and student success in the Alternative Programs.

“One of the biggest changes that occurred was the change in culture and community perception. Through positive connections with students, staff, and families, building relationships with community partners, changing the disciplinary culture, and improved academics, we were able to bring Lynn Camp to the forefront of education in Southeastern Kentucky.  These changes ushered in positive outcomes for our athletic programs, academics, college and career readiness, and graduation rate.”

“I can’t wait to work with the students, staff, families, and community partners to continue the success. Students, staff, and parents can expect fairness, consistency, integrity, and accountability. I will treat everyone with respect and dignity. I understand that we all come from different backgrounds, experiences, and situations, so it is important that students, staff, and families feel empowered to make decisions in their educational program in order to be successful.”

He gave credit to Aimee Gross, former principal, who has accepted an assistant principal position at Knox Central High School.

“I know that I have big shoes to fill with Mrs. Gross doing such a great job.  With the foundation and program structures she has been able to put into place, we will continue to grow. Together, we can ensure that every student has a safe and productive environment in order to be prepared for the workforce, vocational training, or post-secondary education.”

“Every student can be successful if we BELIEVE-ACHIEVE-SUCCEED, and strive for the goal of being a Top 10% District in the State!”

Outside of school, Prewitt enjoys spending time with his wife, Taralyn, and their two daughters, Cambree and Lorelai. He is active in his community as a Master Mason, enjoys hunting and fishing, follows the Cincinnati Reds, and values time with family and friends.
